Hej alla!

Jag l�ser regelbundet Ankis blogg, s�g d�r ett inl�gg och l�nk till bokklubben. Anki skrev att alla var v�lkomna, s� hoppas att det �r ok att jag som nykomling nu registrerat mig.

Jag heter Anne, tillsammans med min svenska man flyttade jag fr�n Sverige till Oregon, USA f�r drygt tv� �r sedan. Ovisst hur l�nge vi stannar h�r, det f�r framtiden utvisa. I Sverige pluggade jag till jurist, h�r i USA har jag (hittills) inte jobbat men gjort en del volont�rarbete, bla p� en kvinnojour.
Jag �lskar att l�sa, det �r ett stort intresse och jag l�ser mycket p� b�de svenska och engelska.

Hall� d�r alla i bokklubben!
Nu var det l�nge sen det h�nde n�t h�r. Saknar den lite, men samtidigt har jag haft fullt upp sj�lv med en massa annan l�sning s� det har liksom inte funnits tid. Inte ens f�r att g� in och titta h�r.

Men nu �r jag lite sugen p� engelska b�cker igen s� varf�r inte f�rs�ka ta upp tr�den igen. Det �r ju dessutom snart julledighet! �tminstone om man f�r tro aff�rerna h�r i USA.

H�r kommer mina svar till fr�gorna. Det tog ett tag, och det var l�nge sen jag l�ste ut boken, men dom flesta fr�gorna svarade jag p� redan d� n�r boken var f�rsk i huvet.

1.What is the significance of the novel�s title? What does it mean in
terms of both the narrator and the story itself?
I think the title means the hard work of rug making - it takes a lot of hard work to harvest the flowers to dye the wool, to collect the wool and then to knot it. And before you can even start on the rug you need to invest in all the materials needed.

2. How would you describe the author�s writing style, and what do
you think this style brings to the novel? Did you find anything
striking or unusual about the way the story unfolds? Did it re-�
mind you of anything you have read before?
It is a narrative story, almost like a tale. The old folk tales add to this too, and even if there is some dialogue most of the story is told by the narrator. I think it gives the story a good flow. It is easy to read and follow.
Of course you expect the uncle�s wife to through them out as soon as she finds a good reason, but it still comes as sort of a surprise I think. Because you think that all is going so well and her uncle really likes her and wants to teach her all the things he know. So you think he would protect her and do what he can to make her life good. I can�t say that it reminded me of another book I read. At least not right now.

3. How much did you know about Iranian history and culture be-�
fore reading this book? Did anything in the story strike you as
completely unlike � or surprisingly reminiscent of � our lives
today? What do you think you gain from reading a novel about a
period in history, as opposed to a nonfiction historical account?
I didn�t know very much about the history. I knew that they have a rich cultural history in literature and arts and mathematics, and that they are strongly influenced by the religion and old traditions and customs. I don�t know if anything was very surprising, and reminiscent � well maybe the young girls will and dreams about her own life. What I gain from reading a historic novel may be the difference in readers view from reading just a book with facts. The language is a little more flowing in a novel and you get the feelings and the scents and all that.

4. The author decided to leave the narrator anonymous, as is the
tradition in many folktales. When, if ever, did you realize that
you didn�t know the narrator�s name? What effect did the ano-�
nymity have on you as a reader? Does it matter whether or not
we know a character�s name?
I don�t think it matters if we know her name. Since the story is told in a narrative way she is already a familiar person. You always know when it is her speaking. I don�t think I realized it until the last chapters of the book, and I think that was because I had read somewhere that she was anonymous. If I hadn�t known it before I don�t think I would have noticed it.

5. Why do you think the author chose to include a number of Ira-�
nian tales throughout the novel? What did these stories add to
your understanding of the book and of Iranian culture as a whole?
Do you have a favorite story?
She wanted to emphasize the narrators thoughts and dreams, and connect her life to lives earlier in the country�s history and in the tales. I don�t know if it added so much to my understanding, but to me the stories tell of strong women who can achieve what they want although it is a patriarchal society they live in. And even if they are mistreated and wrong done they never give up hope for better times. They stand by their wishes and morals and by the truth, and it seems actually that the men are the weaker sex. I liked all the stories, although maybe the last one is the most beautiful, since it is a story about the utter sacrifice. Where the bird even gives his life for her to get her freedom. It struck me though that the stories are so alike the stories in our part of the world. It seems as though it doesn�t really matter from which country, or part of the world you are, the stories are always about the toils of life and about peoples dreams and wishes.

6. Though The Blood of Flowers is set in a time and place that may be
very foreign to most readers, it is a universal story about a girl
reclaiming her life and coming into her own. In what ways is this
a familiar story? In what ways does this story differ from your
own experience or from other coming-�of-�age novels you have
read?

I think all girls are going through a stage when they want to lead their own life, different from their parents life. Even if they live in a patriarchal society they still have their own dreams about the future, and want to make their own life. And when you are young you are often so eager to do new things, and to do them right, that sometimes you just don�t stop to think and ask someone for guidance. And then you make mistakes, but you learn from them. And you learn to ask others for help without feeling week or be embarrassed that you know less.
The biggest difference I think is that she has to bow her will for the elders in her family, and since her father is dead both she and her mother has more or less to do what her uncle thinks they should do. Although, it seems to me that when a woman has been married and then widowed or divorced she has more rights than an unmarried woman, unless she really needs to be supported. Because she can decide whether she wants to marry a man for life or just take a time limited sigheh. She can live on her own and support herself if she really wants to and can. But it will be hard in those country�s with a strong patriarchal structure since unmarried women are looked down upon. It is nothing to strive for there. Compared to our western way of life where it is common that women live by themselves, even as mothers, and support themselves. And no-one really cares if you do, it�s your choice.

7. The Blood of Flowers explores many different relationships in the
narrator�s life � with her mother, her father, her uncle, her
friend, and her husband, to name a few � all bringing out differ-�
ent sides of the narrator. Which relationship did you find the
most compelling? Which did you find the most perplexing?
The most compelling would be the relationship with her uncle. With him she is more of an individual, he listens to her thoughts and teach her what he knows. With him she can be herself, at least most of the time. Almost as she was with her father. The most perplexing I think is the one to her friend, the rich neighbours daughter. Why does she put up with the way she is being treated by her? Even after she is no longer married to the same man as her friend.

8. What is the meaning of the final tale, and why do you think the
author chose to end the novel with this one? Is this the future
you see for the narrator?
I guess the bird in the story is the symbol for her mothers, and fathers, sacrifices for her to make her own life. And the shah is the society, her aunt and the religion, who wants her to marry and keep up the tradition where the woman takes care of the home and the family, instead of being the supporter of it. But by making the most beautiful rug the princess gained her freedom and could decide what to make of her own life, and so can the narrator in the book too. She never gave up on her dream to become a rug maker and to make a life of her own, without a husband that she didn�t choose herself. And she succeeded with that. She started her own business and could support her mother.

9. The intricate art of rug-�making is incredibly important to the
story, and to the narrator herself. What do you think rug-�making
represents with regard to the narrator aside from monetary ben-�
efit? What does it represent in the story itself?
I think it represents her independence. That she can provide for herself. That she can do what she loves and earn money from it. Although the higher art of rug-making is only for men she gets the privilege to learn it from her uncle who is a master. Which makes her an even better rug maker and she can compete on the market with her rugs.
In the story the knotting of rugs represents the knotting of life. With each knot she ties she learns something about herself and about life. Making a rug this way is hard work, and so is life. You can�t be rash and impulsive, you have to think things through and make decisions, even if they don�t turn out to be the right ones. But you learn from what you have done before, and can make the next thing better.

Jag tyckte boken var bra, den var som en saga om forna tider. Jag gillade hennes s�tt att anv�nda historier inv�vda i ber�ttelsen. Den var mycket m�lande och historien h�ll hela v�gen tyckte jag.

1. The Yazdans called their baby Susan instead of Sooki, and the Donaldsons kept their baby's Korean name, Jin-Ho. What is the significance of these choices?
Betydelse f�r ber�ttelsen vet jag inte direkt, d�remot ger det en ganska bra bild av hur olika de b�da f�r�ldraparen �r. Att Yazdans sitt ursprung till trots vill verka mer amerikanska �n de �r. Varf�r inte ge sin dotter ett namn fr�n sin egen kultur liksom? Samma sak g�ller f�r Donaldsons, jag kan f�rst� varf�r man l�ter sitt adopterade barn beh�lla sitt biologiska namn, men jag sj�lv skulle nog valt det som mellannamn, och ge honom eller henne ett namn som jag faktiskt sj�lv valt. Precis som man g�r med ett biologiskt barn.

2. How does Maryam differ from Ziba's parents and her cousin Farah? What factors, both practical and psychological, influence the caracters' desire and ability to make a place for themselves in the American society?
Hmmm. Sv�r fr�ga, jag tycker inte att jag fick l�sa tillr�ckligt mycket om Farah och Zibas f�r�ldrar f�r att kunna svara p� det, eller s� �r det bara s� att jag gl�mt...

3. How do Ziba and Betsy differ as women? As mothers? How does their relationship change over the course of the book?
Som jag skrev under fr�ga 1 s� verkar Betsy v�ldigt m�n om att Jin-Ho inte ska gl�mma sin kultur, men jag tycker det g�r till �verdrift ibland. Barnet har ju ingen som helst erfarenhet av det koreanska samh�ller och jag kan tycka att Betsy ibland g�r s� att hon exkluderas fr�n det amerikanska. Samtidigt menar ju Betsy v�l, men i mina �gon blir det s� fel... Ziba verkar lite mer laid back, l�ter Susan f� mer utrymme, vilket m�rks i kapitlet som ber�ttas ur Jin-Hos �gon. Det kanske inte alltid �r det b�sta s�ttet, eftersom Susan i m�nga avseenden inte verkar s� sympatisk (i just det kapitlet) men �terigen tror jag att b�da mammorna inte vill sina barn ngt illa, utan de har sj�lvklart de allra b�sta intentionerna. Relationen mellan de b�da verkar dock stark, de har b�da g�tt igenom s�nt som jag tror binder dem samman, och det g�r att de trots sina olikheter forts�tter att vara n�ra v�nner och utvecklar denna v�nskap genom �ren.

4. What aspects of her heritage does Maryam vale most and why? And why has she raised her son to be "more american than the Americans"?
Vilka delar hon v�rderar h�gst vet jag inte... Men jag tror att hon, som s� m�nga andra invandrarf�r�ldrar runtom i v�rlden, uppfostrat sin son s� amerikanskt f�r att han ska sm�lta in. Hon vill att han ska ha alla f�rdelar som "amerikanska" barn ska ha. Hon har sj�lv l�mnat sitt land och sitt ursprung s� p� ett s�tt kan det tyckas konstigt att hon inte vill l�mna mer av det till honom, men p� ett annat s�tt inte.

5.Why do you think Maryam makes the decision she does at the end of the book?
Jag tror att hon hat insett att ensam inte �r stark, det betyder oerh�rt mycket att ha m�nniskor runt omkring en som bryr sig och som finns d�r f�r en, �ven om de sj�lva g�r igenom ngt mycket jobbigt. Hennes fasad har r�mnat och jag tror att hon p� ngt s�tt kan slappna av nu och l�ta de andra komma henne inp� livet.

Kan "Remember me" av Sophie Kinsella vara n�sta bok?

Lexi wakes up in hospital after a car accident. She's lost all memory of the last three years and is amazed at how her life has changed: suddenly she's married to a gorgeous guy, she's running her department at work and on paper her life suddenly seems perfect. But slowly she starts to realize that things are not quite as wonderful as they initially appeared to be. For starters, her best friends seem to have distanced themselves from her. And her husband Eric doesn't really seem to be her type.

D� b�rjar v�l jag d�!

1. Jag tycker att Bitsy blir lite f�r bunden av att h�lla kvar sin dotters arv. Hon hindrar p� s�tt och vis Jin-Ho att utveckla sin egen personlighet. Jin-Ho sj�lv vill ju t ex hellre heta n�t annat och vara som "alla andra barn" i omr�det. Hon gillar inte att bli exponerad p g a sitt ursrpung. Bitsy menar s�klart v�l men hon anstr�nger sig lite f�r mycket. Susan � andra sidan uppfostras att vara amerikansk och f�r s� mycket saker och blir s� bortsk�md att hon har sv�rt att k�nna in andra barn. Hennes f�r�ldrar bryr sig inte alls s� mycket om hennes ursprung utan vill ge henne det amerikanska och det iranska ist�llet och hon blir kanske lite utanf�r i de stora familjesammankomsterna p� det s�ttet.

2. Maryam har valt att inte fullt ut uppr�tth�lla sin iranska kultur och sitt spr�k efter att hennes man dog. Hon umg�s sparsamt med sin familj, f�rutom med Sami och Ziba. Hon har v�nner som ocks� �r invandrade men fr�n andra l�nder. Hon vill att hennes son ska vara amerikansk samtidigt som hon sj�lv tycker att amerikanerna �r annorlunda och konstiga.
F�r Maryam blir det en krock inombords n�r hon tr�ffar familjen Donaldson. Hennes vardagsliv �r amerikanskt men hon vill �nd� ha kvar den sf�r av privat som det iranska livet erbjuder. Och hon �r inte helt bekv�m med det �ppna liv som Donaldsons lever. Hon har nog aldrig riktigt till�tit sig att t�nka efter vilken av kulturerna hon vill ha eller hur hon vill sammanf�ra dom.
Zibas f�r�ldrar forts�tter dock att v�rda sin kultur och att prata sitt spr�k n�r de tr�ffas. Men det inneb�r f�r de �ldre kvinnorna att de inte f�r full tillg�ng till spr�ket, medan m�nnen h�ller p� traditionerna och sk�ter livet ut�t, samspelet med samh�llet.
Farah har gift sig med en amerikan som verkligen omfamnar allt det iranska och hon sj�lv lever ett iranskt liv p� amerikanskt s�tt. Hon tar det b�sta ur b�da kulturerna.

3. Som kvinnor: Bitsy �r en kvinna som tagit livet som det kommer och gjort det hon velat. Hon har aldrig arbetat och ser det som sin livsuppgift att vara mamma. Ziba �r flickan fr�n den fina familjen som nu jobbar med n�got som kanske fr�n b�rjan mer var en hobby och som hon kan g�ra lite vid sidan av sitt vanliga liv.
Som m�drar: Bitsy �r den �ldre, lite �verbeskyddande modern som l�ser p� om allt f�r att g�ra allt r�tt. Hon vill s� g�rna g�ra r�tt hela tiden och litar d�rf�r till "experternas" tips och r�d ist�llet f�r att se vad som passar in i hennes och hennes familjs liv. Ziba �r ung och os�ker och vill ocks� g�ra allt r�tt fr�n b�rjan. D�rf�r blir hon v�ldigt beroende av vad Bitsy, som �r �ldre och borde veta mer, s�ger. Det g�r att Ziba och Bitsy ofta kommer i klinch i b�rjan och till och med blir osams om uppfostransfr�gorna. Med tiden blir dock b�da tv� mer avslappnade och kan b�ttre ta till sig sina familjers behov och �ven se och l�ra av varandra utan att det g�r n�n prestige i det.

4. Hon uppskattar mest av allt att iranier tar vara p� sitt privatliv. Man diskuterar inte vad som helst med vem som helst. Men hon har uppfostrat Sami till att vara amerikan f�r att allt ska g� l�ttare f�r honom. Han ska inte beh�va vara "utl�nningen".

5. F�r att hon har har l�ttat lite p� sin sp�rr att sl�ppa in andra m�nniskor i sin privata sf�r. Hon kan vara sig sj�lv med dom hon k�nner och s�ga vad hon tycker utan att n�n tycker illa om det. Hon har sett att de bryr sig om henne och att hon �r en del av fmiljen, trots att hon inte �r amerikan. Hon kan d�rmed visa att hon tycker om dom ocks�.
